New Requirements for Japan’s Business Manager Visa

New Requirements for Japan’s Business Manager Visa

Japan has significantly tightened the requirements for the Business Manager Visa since October 2025.

If you are planning to start or manage a business in Japan and apply for this visa, the main requirements are:

  • Capital of at least JPY 30 million

  • At least one full-time employee → See the below

  • The business manager or a full-time employee must have Japanese language ability equivalent to B2 level (approximately JLPT N2)

  • The applicant must have at least three years of business management experience OR a relevant master’s degree or higher

  • The business must have a real office in Japan

  • The business plan must be reviewed by a qualified professional, such as a CPA, tax accountant, or certified management consultant

Important: Full-Time Employee Requirement

The required full-time employee must generally be one of the following:

  • A Japanese national
  • A Special Permanent Resident
  • A Permanent Resident
  • A spouse of a Japanese national
  • A spouse of a Permanent Resident
  • A Long-Term Resident

Simply hiring a foreign national with a work visa, such as an Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa, does NOT satisfy this requirement.

The previous capital requirement was only JPY 5 million, so the new rules are significantly stricter.

If you are considering starting a business in Japan and obtaining a Business Manager Visa, it is important to carefully check these requirements before establishing your company.
