International University of Japan (IUJ)

Miyo: Are we really heading to a university?
Actually, I’ve never heard of the International University of Japan (IUJ) in Niigata.

We’re driving through such a beautiful natural area.

Mr. Cameroon: Yeah, we might be lost...
Look! There’s a sign for the university.

School Staff: We understand you came here to ask about job opportunities for our students.
I’ll call someone from Admissions and the Career Support Office.

Miyo: Nice to meet you, Ms. Kobayashi.

We were originally supposed to come to Niigata with a team of five people from Cameroon, Africa.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t come to Japan, so I came here with Mr. Cameroon instead.

Ms. Kobayashi: Hearing your story, I think you should contact JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency).
Many of our students are supported by JICA scholarship programs.

There are also special internship programs, but some of them are only available to students from Africa.

Mr. Cameroon: Only for students from Africa!?
We definitely need to hear more about that.

Ms. Kobayashi: Actually, students who come here on JICA scholarships are very fortunate.

Their education is supported by Japanese taxpayers.

That is also why we have to be careful about how we promote the university, because some people may have concerns about how public money is being used.

Miyo: Thank you, Ms. Kobayashi. We will definitely contact JICA about their internship programs. We also need someone to help update our website. I hope this visit can benefit both the students and our business.

Ms. Kobayashi: That’s great! Let me show you around our campus.

Handmade Cheesecake

Image
Yesterday, I visited my father's house. He is living with my brother. Since my father is getting older, my brother usually cooks for both of them. When he tries a new recipe, he often watches videos by popular Japanese YouTubers. This is the handmade cheesecake he made using one of those YouTube recipes. When you buy cheesecake in Japan, most of them are relatively soft. However, the one my brother made was dense, rich, and absolutely delicious. An American friend of mine once told me that she had the most delicious cake in the world in Japan. I’m not sure whether Japan is the best place in the world to eat cake or not, but you can easily find very good cakes in Japan — even at local supermarkets. Going to Tokyo

Image
Yesterday, I went to Tokyo for a business meeting and to attend a seminar by Dr. Ken Mogi, a neuroscientist, in Shinjuku. Tokyo is so crowded—it felt like a completely different world, even though it’s only about 80 km from where I live. During the seminar, there were several things I wanted to ask Dr. Mogi, especially about AI, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. This was actually the fifth time I attended his seminar. For some reason, every time I go, I’m left with a sense that something is unfinished. So yesterday, after the seminar, I asked him one question about AI. He seemed uninterested and looked like he wanted to leave soon. But that’s okay. He is a world-renowned neuroscientist and a bestselling author—why would he be interested in my question?   English edited by ChatGPT ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Japan Trading ・ Exporting quality Japanese used industrial machinery worldwi...

A Chilly Day in Spring in Japan

Image
Today, it's a bit chilly for spring. On days like this, you might hear conversations like this in Japan: "It's a bit cold for spring today, but that's good—it means the cherry blossoms will last longer." People from other countries often wonder why Japanese people become so happy about something as simple as cherry blossoms blooming. Because we grow up in this environment, we may take it for granted. But when we really look at the cherry blossoms, we realize something deeper. They remind us how fleeting life is. They make us feel the transience and preciousness of life—and the value of each day we live.
